BARN OWL BANDING

Monday, June 30, 2025

7:00 PM

On June 30th at 7pm, there will be a special event at Kauffman Orchards. A mated pair of barn owls are currently nesting in the nest box, and will soon be hatching owlets!

Join us for an educational evening, and watch as Dan Mummert carefully takes the owlets out of the nest box, places leg bands around the owls' legs, and performs a wellness check of each owl.

Suggested donation:

$5 per person - support conservation activities in the orchard!

Bring your own chair. Concessions will be available for purchase.

Dan Mummert is a Wildlife Biologist with the Pennsylvania Game Commission. He monitors barn owl and American kestrel activity in our orchards. Barn owl populations are declining due to habitat loss, so the PA Game Commission monitors their nests. Each year, the young owls are banded to track their movements and estimate their lifespan. By contributing to their conservation, we hope to further develop barn owl research and encourage increased barn owl populations across Pennsylvania.
