Rekindle the Romance
I don’t think I have to tell you that life can put a damper on your relationship at times. Between work, kids and the million things that need done around the house, finding time for your significant other can be stressful.
We’re not even going to talk about the pain of trying to find a babysitter. You know I’m right… finding a babysitter is a chore that makes a night out almost not worth it.
Here’s the thing. I’ve been there. Goodness, there are times that I’m still there. And my husband will be frantically moving through life with me and we’ll barely have said hello some days. This is, without a doubt, a busy season of life.
But you know what? I’ve come to a realization. This time is fleeting.
Jon and I are in the thick of parenting young children. We’re still putting together our first home and living life in a busy way. Not all the time but for sure there are days that are hectic. But in the blink of an eye, this time will be over. This season of life will come to a close and there won’t be three busy boys under our feet. We won’t be elbow deep in home improvement projects. {Well, I won’t make any promises there…}
In the blink of an eye, it’ll be just the two of us… shouldn’t we be making us a priority now? We should. And we do! Date nights out are far and few between but that doesn’t hold back a couple of lovebirds like us.
Here’s the funny thing. Before you get married, some of the best times you have are just hanging out at your significant others place. Watching a movie, playing a board game or even just chatting. Once you’re married, that doesn’t change. You guys are still the same people you were when you were dating. So you still enjoy that time watching movies, playing board games and chatting. What really throws it off is the kids. Because you’re too busy to sit and too tired to do… well, anything really.
Which is why Jon and I designate one night a week to “at home date night.”
When we first started this, it seemed silly. We’re always together. Why did we need to designate a date night? But we both felt compelled to follow through. So each Friday {or Saturday, depending on how tired we are} we make sure the kids are in bed on time and we designate it date night. And while the first few times were awkward, the little tradition really grew on us!
Date night in doesn’t have to be boring either! We’ve done everything from painting peg dolls to playing board games with high stakes. Not kidding, that man plays unfairly. I lose and I have to make a cake.
Okay. I’m not really complaining about making a cake.
Either way, over the past few years, we’ve found so many things to do together, all from the comfort of our own home. And the best part is that we get to just enjoy being together. We don’t have to worry about making it to a movie on time. Or whether or not the restaurant will have anything we want. Or if we’re going to have to go home in the middle of our date because our child has randomly puked.
I cannot tell you how amazing this has been for us! It’s a tradition that I can’t wait to continue. Especially our upcoming date. This date is going to be all about coziness. I’m talking plush blankets, fluffy pillows, snuggles on the couch and mugs of Kauffman’s Fruit Farm. All I need to do now is pick a fall themed movie to go with that delicious mulled cider.
Honestly, I think this will be one of the best date nights yet. Because I don’t have to leave the house for ANY of it. Kauffman’s Fruit Farm shipped the mulled cider right to my door, Netflix has a ton of movies and I’ve got more blankets and pillows than ever.
I cannot wait.
So tell me… do you have date night in? What do you like to do?
Until next time, Happy Friday!
